An Education in Turf Excellence

Free Practical Seminars for
Golf Course Superintendents and their Maintenance Teams

Growing good turf and maintaining it to the standards required by today’s golfers and professionals is never easy.

To assist, Bernhard and Company have developed seminars based on 150 years of serving the golf and recreation turf industry.

The aim of the seminars is to help superintendents, management and their shop maintenance crews to maintain their standards of turf with higher efficiency and less expense — “Better Turf For Less Money”. Each session is aimed at making the superintendent’s life easier. This includes helping the crew.

The content and presentation of these sessions can be customized to suit the needs of the audience. Timing can be flexible; sessions can range from one hour to a complete day. Content can vary from illustrated lecture and discussion to hands-on, or a mixture of both.

Although we are a commercial enterprise, the primary thrust of these seminars is educational and a contribution from Bernhards to the golf and turf industry.

Function of reel mower

Mower functions are often confused by both superintendents and mechanics. Resulting practices have tended to produce some fixed ideas as to what can and cannot work. Many of these myths are dispelled in the program. Explanations are supported by practical reasons as to what happens, and why, in several common practices of mower use.

The cutting techniques and effects of each method are clearly illustrated with the aid of demonstration cutting units and several technical slides and overheads.

Financial Implications relating to Maintenance Cost

Financial considerations are, of course, central to educational sessions so that new methods and equipment advances can be justified to board members. Computer analysis of club maintenance schemes form part of the educational program. Attendees are given opportunities to measure the financial impact of their present methods and compare them with new alternatives.

Agronomic Implications – Mowing with sharp reels

Market research indicates only 18% of superintendents connect sharpening as a process with the health of their grass.

The program seeks to link the two by using slides and overheads illustrating grass blade tips as seen through microscopes. Slides are also provided showing the different effects on turf conditions in several countries around the world. This section particularly homes in on fungal issues, reduced use of chemical, and the environmental concerns being expressed world wide.
